Nicomekl Sea Dam Replacement

The Nicomekl Water Control Structure (WCS) project, initiated by the City of Surrey, is a critical component of its Coastal Flood Adaptation Strategy (CFAS). This project addresses the urgent need to replace the aging Nicomekl Sea Dam, an almost century-old structure vulnerable to projected sea level rise and seismic events. The new WCS is engineered to provide robust flood protection for Surrey’s lowlands, safeguarding agricultural areas and vital infrastructure. Strategically located upstream of the existing sea dam and adjacent to King George Blvd, the new structure’s placement is designed to minimize disruption and integrate with the surrounding dyke system. A significant aspect of this project includes the relocation of existing Metro Vancouver and City of Surrey water mains, ensuring continuous flood protection and enhancing public access through integrated pathways.

Woodfibre Lng Buildings

I played a key role in the Woodfibre LNG Buildings project, a significant development involving the construction of a liquified natural gas (LNG) plant located approximately 7 km southwest of Squamish, B.C. This facility is designed to produce 2.1 million metric tonnes of LNG per year, with site access during construction and operations limited to barge or helicopter. My company, Brybil Projects Ltd., was contracted by LB LNG Constructors, the design-builder, to undertake the design of six critical pre-engineered buildings for the Woodfibre LNG facility, EPC by McDermott. The project was characterized by an exceptionally expedited timeline, demanding rapid design turnarounds. For instance, the initial phase from project kick-off to the 30% design submission for all six buildings was completed in under six weeks.

Carrera IEC Upgrades

The Lulu Island Energy Company (LIEC), in partnership with Corix Utilities Inc. (Corix), operates the Richmond District Energy Utility (RDEU) to provide space heating and domestic hot water to its service area in Richmond, British Columbia. A key initiative for LIEC and Corix was the connection of the new Park Residences II (Mah Bing) Towers D + E and C developments to the RDEU. This expansion necessitated significant upgrades to the existing Carrera Interim Energy Centre (IEC).

Hay River Post Flood Condition and Mitigation

We were commissioned by the Government of Northwest Territories, Municipal and Community Affairs (MACA) to address the extensive damage to residential properties. Serpentine Water Control Structure

The Serpentine Water Control Structure is a critical infrastructure project designed to replace an existing, century-old structure that is seismically vulnerable and inadequate for projected sea level rise. This new watertight concrete structure, spanning the Serpentine River, serves multiple crucial functions: Flood Protection: Provides essential flood protection for the Surrey Lowlands. Tidal Fluctuation Management: Limits tidal influences within the Serpentine River. Gravity Drainage: Facilitates the natural flow of the Serpentine River into Boundary Bay during low tide periods. Enhanced Infrastructure: Incorporates a pedestrian bridge with limited access for maintenance vehicles, necessitating adherence to relevant bridge design codes. The primary objective was to develop a robust and resilient water control structure that meets current and future environmental demands while ensuring public safety and operational efficiency.

Kitkatla WTP Upgrades

This project involved the strategic expansion and upgrade of the wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) in Gitxaala. The primary objective was to enhance the plant’s operational capabilities, requiring comprehensive planning for structural modifications and associated system integrations. My Role and Responsibilities: Financial & Budgetary Management As a key member of the engineering team, I was entrusted with the critical task of preparing the initial structural upgrade plans and developing a Class D cost estimate for the proposed expansion of the wastewater treatment plant. My focus was to establish a foundational budget that was both realistic and aligned with the project’s preliminary scope.

Bay Avenue Wastewater Pump Station

This project involved the comprehensive redesign and structural upgrade of the Bay Avenue Wastewater Pump Station, a critical facility with a 300 L/s capacity. Executed within a tightly constrained site, the project presented unique challenges, including steep excavations and the necessity for temporary shoring. Key structural components included the design and construction of a new valve chamber and a second wet well, integrated with the existing concrete wet well. Furthermore, I engineered significant strengthening details to ensure the existing wet well meets current seismic and operational code requirements. The scope also encompassed the structural detailing for a guide track system to support a material conveyance cart.

Haisla Bridge Replacement Project

Paradise Show House

The Paradise Show House project entailed the comprehensive structural design for a primary residential dwelling and a distinct garage/office structure in Paradise, California. The main residence was envisioned with shallow footing foundations, a structured ground floor spanning a crawl space, a partial second floor, and a pitched roof. Prominent superstructure elements included steel beams supporting innovative Nexii panels for the ground and second floors, complemented by exposed timber beams supporting Nexii panels at the roof level. Load-bearing Nexii panels were integral to the design, engineered to support the floor and roof systems, as well as to resist lateral loads. The separate garage/office, a structure of approximately 300 square feet, was designed with a concrete slab-on-grade, shallow foundations, and a comparable Nexii superstructure.

Camrose Wwtp Upgrade Project

Performed engineering calculations for the steel structural elements in the wastewater treatment plant in Camrose and for the existing lift station upgrades.
