LNGC Non-Process Buildings
On the LNGC Non-Process Buildings project in Kitimat, BC, I worked as a structural design engineer on foundations for a new Pre-Engineered Steel Building (PESB) materials warehouse, a central workshop, and artic corridor walkways connecting all site buildings. The structural scope included large-scale reinforced concrete foundations and retaining walls for challenging site conditions.
What I did
I was involved across the full project lifecycle - concept through construction.
Concept and feasibility:
- Evaluated different structural systems to find the best fit for the project’s requirements.
- Obtained and analyzed quotes from Pre-Engineered Steel Building suppliers.
- Participated in Value Engineering sessions with the project team, identifying cost savings without compromising structural integrity.
Detailed design:
- Led the structural design of multiple large-scale reinforced concrete foundations for the materials warehouse, central workshop, and artic corridor walkways.
- Participated in weekly multi-disciplinary meetings, raising structural interface issues and working out solutions with other disciplines.
- Prepared tender drawings and detailed specifications.
- Automated the process for structural model creation, analysis, and results parsing - a significant efficiency gain.
Tendering:
- Served as a technical point of contact, responding to tender inquiries from bidders.
Construction:
- Issued IFC drawings upon contract award.
- Reviewed contractor shop drawings and responded to RFIs.
- Issued site instructions to clarify design intent or address unforeseen site conditions.
- Reviewed work progress on-site and joined teleconference calls with the contractor to resolve issues quickly.
- Provided technical interpretation of structural specifications.
- Managed contract administration tasks - progress claims, material testing results.
- Compiled deficiency items ahead of substantial completion.
Deliverables
- Structural designs for multiple large-scale foundations and associated structures.
- Automated model creation, analysis, and results parsing that improved design workflow efficiency.
- Tender and construction documentation.
- Construction phase support through RFI responses, shop drawing reviews, and site inspections.
- Scheduled completion: 2023.
